Beyond the Classroom is a youth-led education Social Enterprise. We deliver innovative personal development programmes to young people, predominantly through theatre and peer-mentoring. Our mission is to equip young people with the tools to make decisions and take action based on their own needs, feelings and motivations.

This is a new and exciting position with our ambitious, creative youth led organisation. We seek an inspiring, energetic and positive youth facilitator / project assistant to help us deliver our long-term Girlhood to Womanhood programme with schools across London. As a facilitator, you will be able to implement the use of music and or drama in the delivery of personal and professional development programmes. Please bear in mind that our work involves using the performing arts to develop young people’s wellbeing and confidence, the arts are a method of facilitation rather than a primary outcome of our work.

The role will be split between direct facilitation work with groups of young people in schools and community settings, as well as joining us in our south London office to support the operations and administration of our work. We are keen to attract individuals who are able to support our organisational operations in one or more of the following areas: General administration, social media, film-making, curriculum design, copy writing and graphic design.

This position is ideal for an individual seeking to develop their career within the youth, personal development sector. You will share the team’s passion for youth empowerment, social enterprise and be looking to apply your skills and experience to this area. You should have a proven commitment to this area of work, demonstrated through at least one to two years’ previous full-time, part-time and / or voluntary experience within a similar role.

You will thrive in a small, creative and resourceful team and be willing to work flexibly within your role.  We are looking for a dynamic and dedicated individual with strong personal development and communication skills. The successful applicant will have the initiative and leadership-skills required to ensure smooth programme delivery of innovative life-skills programmes.

The role

The position involves 2 days a week supporting our operations in the office and a half day working with one of our partner schools. There is the potential to increase the amount of direct facilitation time with young people in the new academic year from September/October 2018.

Creative Communication

Depending on your own skills and interests we are looking for a candidate to support the development of organisational communications in one or more of the following areas:

  • Social media –  Development and maintenance across a variety of networks
  • Film-making – The production of short films for both marketing and to support our young people in collating and producing their own personal portfolios
  • Curriculum Design – Updating of our programme content and design with engaging and innovative tools and techniques.
  • Copy writing – Producing engaging and compelling content for newsletters, blogs, brochures and other written communication
  • Branding and graphic design – Support in the production of online and printed literature

General administration

  • Provide administrative support to operations team
  • Booking and managing accreditation moderations for young people
  • Compiling and maintaining our weekly alumni newsletter
  • Updating spreadsheets and producing regular reports
  • Any other ad-hoc duties as directed


  • Your primary objective will be to positively impact the decision-making skills and wellbeing of a group of 11 – 19 year old young females within a school setting.
  • Facilitate an effective and engaging youth programme, to support young women in dealing with sensitive issues within the Girlhood to Womanhood theme (e.g. teenage relationship abuse, peer pressure & low self-esteem). With a strong focus on the use of mentoring and the performing arts.
  • The programme will involve a group of young females using their creativity and personal experience to devise an original piece of performance.  You will be responsible for developing their confidence, self-value and self-esteem throughout this process.
  • You will take responsibility and initiative for ensuring that the programme meets its aims and objectives, including monitoring and evaluation.


The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate

  • Evidence of a clear DBS history
  • Proven passion for youth development and strong background in working with young people of diverse backgrounds and needs
  • Openness to learning new skills and gaining new experiences within the BTC model
  • Good leadership skills with an emphasis on collaboration
  • Comfortable in addressing sensitive issues and confident in supporting young people to deal with these issues
  • Reliability and ability to work on own initiative to schedule, and within budget


  • Lived experience of the sensitive coming of age issues the programme addresses and happy to use personal experience to inform best practice, only where appropriate
  • Experience delivering Arts Award qualifications
  • Proven passion for the Arts and or/film-making
  • Good knowledge of the social and economic context of Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark.
  • Applicants who reflect the diverse make-up of the south London community
  • Qualifications in TIE, social work, youth work
  • Driving licence and access to own car
